Robitussin is a drug that is manufactured by Pfizer Inc (USA). It is used in the treatment and relief of coughs and colds. The drug is available in various formulations, but most commonly Robitussin DM, a combination of guinafenesin and dextremethorpan. The dextremethorpan is very effective in the suppression of coughs and acts by affecting the brain signals that trigger the reflex to cough. The guinafenesin acts as cough expectorant.
Expectorant means that it makes dry coughs more productive through the loosening of phlegm in order to produce and expel chest congestions through the mouth. Because of these effects, Robitussin DM is commonly used in the treatment and relief of coughs that are caused by common colds and other infections of the upper respiratory tract. It is not very effective in the treatment of coughs that are caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.
