Robitussin Abuse Side Effects

Robitussin is a cough medication that is available as on over-the-counter drug. The main components of the drug are guinafenesin (a cough expectorant) and dextromethorphan (A cough depressant). When taken in excessively high dosages and for a long time with the intention of abuse and causing the high and relaxed feelings of high, these two drugs can cause serious side effects.   • Dry mouth
  • Muscle pains
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Poor coordination
  • General body weakness
  • Altered heart rhythms
  • Rapid eyeball movements

Which dosages cause the side effects? – Side effects of Robitussin begin to be experienced when the patient takes between 100 and 200 mg. This dosage cause stimulation that is mild, so the symptoms are not very severe. Between 200 and 400 mg, the patient begins experiencing hallucinations and euphoria. Dosages between 300mg and 600 mg will cause motor effects and perception distortion. Dosages between 500 and 1,000 mg cause dissociative sedation. According to the DEA, at very high dosages the dextromethorphan content of Robitussin has very similar severe effects like phencyclidine (PCP).

The dangerous side effects – The intake and administration of Robitussin with other drugs can cause very severe side effects that can cause death. The worst side effects can occur if the drug is taken simultaneously with depressant drugs. The depression of the body’s respiratory system may be very severe to the extent off causing death. The interaction with other drugs may also cause epilepsy and other brain damage.
